Salt softener: an effective chemical principle… but regulated
A traditional softener uses an ion-exchange resin: calcium (Ca²⁺) and magnesium (Mg²⁺) ions, responsible for limescale, are retained by the resin and replaced by sodium (Na⁺) ions. Result: the hardness of the water (°f) decreases.
This system is effective, but it is intentionally limited:
- In practice, a salt softener is set for an anti-limescale action of about 80 to 90% maximum
- The goal is to maintain values between 7°f and 15°f at the outlet of the device
Why this limit?
- Below ~7°f, the water becomes aggressive and corrosive to metal pipes and certain plumbing components
- Water that is too softened has its ionic composition altered (more sodium, less calcium/magnesium), which changes its potability characteristics compared to the original water
Specifically, a salt softener transforms the water you drink: it changes its mineral composition and sodium content, which can be a concern for certain populations (low-sodium diets, infants, etc.).
Size, consumables and environmental impact of salt softeners
Beyond the chemistry of water, a salt softener has significant practical constraints:
- Size: resin bottle(s) + salt tank, often large, to be installed in a technical room, garage or cellar
- Consumables: regular purchase and storage of special softener salt
- Electricity : most models are electric (programmed valve, displays, etc.)
- Regular maintenance : checking the salt level, cleaning the tank, checking the parameters, sometimes disinfecting the resin
- Frequent regenerations : depending on the hardness of the water and consumption, the resin can be regenerated several times a month and thus thousands of litres of water are discharged each year in the form of brine
These discharges of salty water into the sewers are a real environmental and economic issue.
Over 10 years, the total cost (device + salt + water + electricity + maintenance) of a salt softener becomes significant.
Mechanical vortex softener : the limestone transformed, not removed
Our Mizuro mechanical softeners are based on a physical principle: the creation of a controlled vortex that modifies the structure of the limestone.
- Limestone (in the form of calcite) is transformed into aragonite, another crystalline form of calcium carbonate (CaCO₃)
- The total amount of limestone in the water does not change: the °f remains the same in and out
- What changes is the shape of the crystals: aragonite is non-scaling
Consequences :
- The white deposits that may appear on walls, fittings or shower screens can be removed with a simple wipe of a cloth
- In pipes and appliances, the formation of hard and compact layers is greatly reduced
- One can achieve limescale efficiency of up to 98%, well beyond the typical 80–90% of a salt softener, as there is no need to limit treatment to preserve a minimum °f
Potability and water quality: a very different impact
Unlike a salt softener:
- A vortex softener does not alter the ionic composition of the water
- It does not add any sodium
- It does not change the potability of the water compared to the source water
For drinking water uses (cooking, coffee, tea, meal preparation), this means you retain water identical to that of the network in terms of mineralization, simply with limescale rendered non-scaling.
In contrast, a traditional softener greatly impacts the quality of the water we drink, as it replaces part of the calcium and magnesium with sodium. In many installations, a by-pass or an unsoftened draw-off point is specifically installed for cooking.
Footprint, maintenance and overall cost: the advantage of the mechanical
In terms of installation and operation, Mizuro vortex mechanical softeners have several advantages:

Over time, the total cost of ownership (purchase + installation + maintenance + consumables) is therefore significantly lower than that of a salt softener, while being more economical and more environmentally friendly.
Why combine with an ACF filter and a pre-filter?
For an overall improvement in water quality, we recommend combining:
- Automatic drain pre-filter: Retains large sediments, protects the ACF filter and the softener, extends their lifespan
- ACF cartridge filter (activated carbon): Filters fine sediments (> 5 microns), reduces chlorine, certain heavy metals and other organic pollutants, and improves the taste, smell and comfort of the water
- Vortex mechanical softener: Transforms limestone into non-scaling aragonite with an efficiency of up to 98%
